My epic Utah trip + your ski trip with points.
Thought skiing is only for richies? Think again.
I’m just getting back from a week in Utah.
It was awesome.
We had plenty of points to go to all kinds of foreign/exoctic locations, but we chose Utah.
Why?
My wife’s very pregnant & didn’t want to leave the country.
Utah people are the nicest in the world.
Utah is awesome.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll break down some of our trip and share with you some scouting I did for all of you on how to book an epic ski trip at one of Utah’s world-class resorts with your points.
Even if you don’t ski/snowboard, are you really not interested in experiencing winter like THIS?
Colin takes on Utah:
Flights:
My wife & daughter had 2 Southwest flight credits lying around so we used those for their flights.
I transferred 19,000 Chase points to Southwest to book my roundtrip flights.
We took 3 checked bags, a carry-on, a carseat, and a stroller. Southwest is wonderful. Flights were early every time.
Lodging:
While we were looking at the Hyatt Place/Hyatt House Provo, we opted for an Airbnb so we could cook, have more space, and be more comfortable.
The best part of our Airbnb? You walked right out to this park:
Mountain views were insane. Everywhere.
Very simple but functional place:
I’d highly recommend this Airbnb & our host Steven!
Some of the cool things we did:
Drove the Alpine Loop
Went to a year-round Christmas shop in Midway, Utah.
Went to Park City, Utah.
Went to Tibble Fork Reservoir.
Successfully hiked with a 2.5 year old.
Colors were amazing! I 100% recommend Utah for your next trip as a family.
Your Utah Ski Trip
Utah has world-class skiing.
Here’s a helpful map of the best resorts:
It’s crazy how close the resorts are to the city/airport. SO much closer than Denver.
Here’s how I book a Utah ski trip with points & miles:
Flights:
If you aren’t’ doing everything possible to get Amex points with the new Alaska news, I’m not sure what you’re doing.
I can fly from Fort Wayne, IN to SLC for only 10k points one-way:
Fly from the East Coast for only 12.5k one-way:
And for my Texas people:
Other good ways to book flights to SLC:
Southwest Flights
SW Rapid Rewards
United Flights
Transfer to Avianca Life Miles
Transfer to Air Canada
Delta Flights
Delta SkyMiles
Transfer to Virgin Atlantic
Hotels:
This is where you will save big. Hotels in the ski areas are wildly expensive.
I got to scout out a Hyatt property that’s still under construction - the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
It looks unreal.
Park City area has two excellent options to get a TON of value from Hyatt points:
Stay at the Hyatt Place to save money/points, then ball out for a night or 2 at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
Now, like Disney tickets, you can’t use points to buy lift tickets - be prepared to shell out for those - but, if you don’t have to pay for flights or hotels, you have a lot more to work with!
I hope this helps as you consider planning a ski trip for this winter.
