Hawaii: How to fly & stay for free w/points.
The land of $12 milk (and $25 honey) awaits.
I think everyone’s going to Hawaii except me.
In the last 2 weeks, I’ve had four clients wanting me to help them book a Hawaii trip.
I can’t blame them - it’s one of the most beautiful & unique destinations in the world.
Also one of the most expensive.
So let’s save you guys some BIG MONEY today and convince you to book a trip to the islands.
Flying to Hawaii with points:
Let me just say right now - none of the deals from the Midwest/East Coast are jaw-dropping.
(Unless you get lucky with Turkish Airlines).
We’ll do Turkey soon. (Gobble gobble.)
From the West Coast, things get a little more spicy.
There are hundreds of flights every day from the continental U.S. to Hawaii - it’s not that hard to find cheap cash flights.
So, using points to fly to Hawaii is not nearly as valuable as using them to fly to Europe (similar distance).
BUT, as I always say, points are about going where you WANT to go - Hawaii in this case, so we’re going to learn how to do it!
West Coast buddies:
(East Coasters, sorry, you need to read this section).
Oh, you lucky duckies.
Here are the top ways to fly to Hawaii with points & miles.
Turkish Airlines Miles n’ Smiles
You can fly to Hawaii on United from L.A for as low as 10,000 miles one-way (20k RT).
Insane deal.
The problem? Availability is tight.
I’ve mostly found availability by looking last minute or wayyy (almost 1 year) out.
Best bet to find availability?
Search for saver award availability through United. Some of those saver awards should be available on Turkish’s website.
Southwest
I love Southwest. I’m writing this on a Southwest flight actually.
You can fly roundtrip from the West Coast to Hawaii for as low as 23,000 Southwest points.
You can transfer points from Chase over to Southwest.
Super easy booking.
Qatar Airways.
Hitting you with a curveball here.
If you want to fly nonstop to Hawaii on American Airlines, British Airways is no longer the way to book it.
Well, it kind of is.
This flight from Maui to Phoenix is 20,000 Avios through BA.
You can book the same flight (this one is going the other way but it works both ways) for only 13,000 Avios through Qatar!
But not many banks transfer to Qatar.
No problemo.
You can transfer from your bank to British Airways, then transfer British Airways Avios to Qatar Avios.
I know, a little scary. But look it up, it’s easy.
I just helped a client do this.
East Coast/Midwest buddies:
Great news.
Turkish & Southwest are both great options for you still.
Unless you find a direct American flight from the East Coast, Qatar won’t do much for you.
Dallas has one, by the way.
And of course, AAdvantage is a great way to get to Hawaii from anywhere.
How to stay for FREE:
There are a ton of hotels in Hawaii.
Sadly, there are very few Hyatt hotels (my favorite program).
My recommendations:
Use Chase/Bilt points to book a Hyatt.
Get a Marriott or IHG card with an elevated bonus to book one of their hotels.
How to find good deals?
Compare the points price with the cash price.
Check out The Points Guy’s recent point valuations.
Make sure you’re getting equal or more cents per point than what TPG says.
The bottom line:
Hawaii is amazing. You should try and go.
