Go Somewhere: Volume 8

A weird hotel hack, doing Disney on points, and how I'm going to Rome for free next week.

Hey all you cool cats and kittens new subscribers! Thrilled you’re here.

Here’s what you’ll get out of each Friday newsletter:

  • Two epic travel hacks.

  • One story of a real family/couple booking a trip on points.

And maybe, just maybe, I’ll throw in some of my travel memes.

  • When I post memes on LinkedIn, I get no likes. But I love memes - so they’re included.

Let’s get into the meat for this week.

Earn a hilariously large gift card for booking a hotel.

Check out Rocketmiles.

It lets you earn gift cards and points with your favorite rewards programs when you book hotels.

This is assuming you’re having to pay cash for a hotel *gasp*.

I’m looking at you, business travelers - if you get to book your own place, you need to check Rocketmiles EVERY trip.

Check this out.

If you are already planning to book a hotel in Turks & Caicos this winter, you can get the price of one night in the form of an Amazon gift card.

You basically get a free night out of this!

Amazon is just one of many programs to choose from, you can also look at loyalty programs we’ve discussed before, like AAdvantage, Flying Blue, Turkish, and more!

Next time you have to book a hotel, look at Rocketmiles first. Reward yourself.

Also, don’t ask me how this works, I don’t really get it.

Let’s go to Disney!

*Cue my wife screaming with delight*

She really wants to go. But our daughter isn’t even two yet? Isn’t that too early? Let me know what you think…

Here’s how we will eventually go to Disney on points…

Flights:

I love my points, but I’m looking at $76 RT flights nonstop Columbus —> Orlando with Frontier in January.

I don’t care if I have to pay for a bag, that’s a steal.

If I wanted to use points, I’d book with American on British Airways, United on Aeroplan or Avianca, or even look at booking a Delta flight with Virgin Atlantic.

Hotel:

Check out this amazing Wyndham property connected to Disney Springs.

15k points per night? Sure, no problem. Done.

I’ve got enough transferable Capital One points to get us a week in Disney no problem.

So, so far we have $150 in flights, $0 in hotels (15k points per night), and now we need some Disney tickets.

Two options: cash or Capital One points.

My family would be looking at about $1,200 in tickets.

OUCH. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.

This isn’t flashy or travel hacky - honestly, what I’d do, is just save up and pay cash for these. I don’t want to waste my Capital One points at 1 cent per point.

I know I can get 3-5x that easily.

There really isn’t a way to hack Disney tickets.

Here’s a travel hack no one wants to hear: be financially responsible, save money, and do the things you want.

And, that’s how I’d do Disney, if my wife makes me we decide as a family to go:)

Going to Rome for freeeee - Our story!

It’s me, hi, I’m the featured family, it’s me.

Destination: Rome & Assisi, Italy.

Occasion: Catholic pilgrimage.

Time of year: November

Airline: Icelandair

Hotel: I’ll tell you soon.

This was the first trip I travel hacked about a year ago. I didn’t really know what I was doing then. But it worked out.

I got the Capital One Venture Rewards card, got the sign-up bonus, and quickly had over 100k points. I found insane cash fares for $390 RT on IcelandAir. For me, my wife, and our (lap) child, we paid 78k points. Free flights to Rome.

We booked an Airbnb. Then cancelled it. Now we’re staying for free.

My wife may or may not be an IG influencer. An amazing couple American couple living in Rome reached out and offered us a guest apartment where they live at the Pontifical North American College. This is not available to the public. We are BLESSED. So we’re there for a week, for free. Wild.

We are popping up to Assisi for a night - I used my Chase Sapphire Preferred annual hotel credit to cover half of the hotel there - we’ll be suffering in an executive suite paying $64 for one night in the heart of the city.

We are so blessed. Life is so good.

My advice: Book the trip. It doesn’t have to be the best CPP redemption rate. Just go. The title of this newsletter is Go Somewhere because I know travel changes lives. I’m passionate about helping as many people as I can see the world, because I know how it’s changed me. Get out there and book a trip.

Until next time.

peace.

JUST KIDDING. Here’s the memes.
