Go Somewhere: Volume 1

You can travel cheaper than you think.

Welcome to Go Somewhere. So glad you’re here.

Each week, I’m going to give you two “hacks” for amazing deals on travel.

I want to make travel accessible to everyone, regardless of wealth.

I believe anyone can travel anywhere through budgeting, taking control of your finances, diligent saving, and the magic of credit card reward points.

No more dreaming about that trip to Europe, it’s time to do it.

No more IG reels of Bora Bora, it’s time to figure out how to get there.

I want to help you go on one epic trip a year for the next 3 years through saving, expert planning, deal hunting, and credit card points.

How does that sound?

Great.

Let’s get into it.

We’ll start simple, and ramp up quickly.

Hack #1: Cheap Flights

Every epic trip starts with a flight. Flights are ridiculously expensive at times. This newsletter is aimed at people brand new to travel planning and travel hacking. Before you try and score a crazy deal with a points transfer partner, you need to know how to find good ol’ fashioned cheap cash flights.

My recommendations:

  • Be flexible on dates: you’re not going to find one if you HAVE to travel certain dates.

  • Be flexible on location: Go where the deals are.

  • Let the pros do the heavy lifting for you

    • Subscribe to Going - this investment will pay for itself 10x. This is how I found $380 RT flights to Europe for my family this fall.

      • **Hack** - Split this membership with your buddies and save big.

    • Check out Dollar Flight Club - same concept as Going, just another option.

    • Track a flight/itinerary on Google Flights so when it goes on sale you can strike immediately.

    • Learn to love Google Flights. Scan it. Try different city combos - I promise the deals are there.

  • Be patient - the deals will come.

    • I’ve been watching for a deal for a friend to get her to and from Scotland at Christmas for months - just found a beautiful itinerary for $534 RT.

    • I waited for months on a deal to Rome and am going for $380 RT in November.

Hack #2: United Excursionist Perk

Now, let me show you how to use points for an ACTUAL free flight.

You can get a free flight using United Miles on a multi-stop itinerary.

You can get a round-trip flight from Chicago to Paris for ~80k United Miles. Not a great deal, I’d definitely want something better.

But, with this perk, that deal becomes far more spicy.

For the same amount of miles, you can fly Chicago —> Paris, Paris —> Athens (FREE), then Athens —> Chicago.

3 flights for the price of 2.

It’s called the Excursionist Perk.

You can take it to the next level if you look carefully at what United defines as a region.

Whether you want to island hop in the Caribbean, get to Mauritius from South Africa, or start your Mexican getaway in Cabo then pop over to Cancun, this deal could provide massive value to your trip.

To Redeem:

  • Search on United’s website for a multi-stop flight.

  • Make sure the free flight is in a different region than where you flew from, and is in the same region as your destination (i.e. you can’t fly Miami —> Los Angeles then get a free flight to Alaska, you have to leave your region).

  • For the price of the second flight, it will be 0 points.

  • Book as directed!

That’s it for this week. I’m on a mission to help 100 families book one epic trip a year, on points, for the next three years. Stay tuned for more info on that.
